Do Dental Implants Work Like Real Teeth?

Losing a tooth to decay or injury can be alarming, especially if you aren’t familiar with your tooth replacement options. Not all tooth replacement procedures are created equal, and if you’re concerned about restoring full dental function, you should ask your dentist about dental implants. There are many reasons implant placement is one of the most popular procedures after tooth loss. Here are a few things you should know if you’re considering this permanent tooth replacement option.

The Implant Placement Process

Implant placement isn’t typically done in just one step. Here’s how the process usually happens:

1. Your dentist surgically uncovers a portion of your jaw just below the missing tooth socket, then drills a hole into the bone.
2. Your dentist stitches up the gum tissue and gives you instructions for taking care of the area while it heals. During this healing period, the bone tissue grows around the implant and holds it firmly in place.
3. The top of the implant post is surgically uncovered once again and a piece called an abutment is attached to the top. The surgical site is once again given time to heal.
4. A dental crown is attached to the abutment to restore the smile.

Implant posts and abutments are usually made from titanium. The sturdy material is valued in dentistry because it is exceptionally strong,  biocompatible and resistant to corrosion. Zirconium implants are also growing in popularity and have comparable success rates to titanium. The visible crown portion of the implant is typically made from porcelain or another type of durable material that looks like real teeth.

Once your implant is placed and healed, you will notice your new tooth is just as strong as a natural tooth. With proper care, it could potentially last the rest of your life.
